en passant in Chess

When a pawn advances two squares, it can be captured in an unusual way by an enemy pawn to the side of where it lands.

When a pawn is captured 'en passant', it's as if it had only moved forward one square, and was then captured 'in passing', which is the meaning of the term 'en passant'
