Daniel Lyons' Notes

Jesus

Jesus' Name

Matthew 1.21 She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."

Jesus is an Aramaic variant of the name Joshua. Joshua is a Hebrew name which we find in the Old Testament. It means Yahweh saves.

The English version of the name Jesus is derived from the Greek form of the name Joshua in both Septuagint and the New Testament.

Hebrews 4.8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day.

The word here translated Joshua in Hebrews 4:8 is the same Greek word that is translated as Jesus when referring to Jesus.

Yahweh Saves

Again, Jesus' name, which is the same as Joshua, means Yahweh saves. Consider how significant this is! Yahweh indeed does save. And how does He do it? Through His Son who is named "Yahweh saves"!

While sin has brought into this world strife, malice, fighting, gossip, slander, prejudice, oppression, death, and even war, Jesus has brought us salvation!
