Frontmatter is a section commonly at the beginning of a Markdown file^[1] that contains metadata about the file. It is typically written in YAML (though it can also be written in TOML, JSON, or other formats).

The popular Markdown app Obsidian uses Frontmatter extensively to implement properties in Obsidian.
