Daniel Lyons' Notes

weekly schedule

Ephesians 5:15-16 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Weekly Schedule Audit

  • Treat your weekly schedule like a budget.
  • First record how you are actually using your time.
    • This helps you understand where your time is currently going.
  • Then craft an ideal weekly schedule.
    • Here's a helpful spreadsheet template and explainer
    • This gives you a focus of what each focus should look like.
    • Inevitably you will deviate from the weekly schedule and that is okay. This is not a failure. Simply review your weekly schedule to help you identify the issues and get back on course.
  • Create a recurring weekly appointment for reviewing your last week and planning the next week (the Weekly Review).

Purpose of a Weekly Schedule

  • Why do you need a weekly schedule?
    • Scheduling helps you live out your calling by giving you a plan, focus and direction.
    • Scheduling helps you to walk wisely
    • Scheduling forces you to acknowledge your finitude.
    • Scheduling allows you to measure success or failure:
      • We redefine a faithful week.
        • A faithful week is NOT "Did I accomplish everything I wanted this week."
        • A faithful week IS "Did I faithfully follow the plan."

How to create an ideal weekly schedule

  1. Review your weekly schedule audit
  2. Make a new schedule from scratch
  3. Choose a theme for each day of the week
  4. Fill in big recurring commitments (sleep, meals, church, work etc.)
  5. Define your 3 key time blocks:
    • Psalm 90.12 So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
    1. Grow Time: This is time to focus on intellectual domain, spiritual domain, and physical domain.
      • This is typically your morning routine.
    2. Goal Time:
      • Time dedicated to making progress on your goals.
    3. Grit Time: Urgent stuff that needs to get done.
      • e.g. checking email, mail, chores etc.
      • Our intention is to confine this so that it doesn't spread everywhere.
