📖Bible Passage

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

Points

The Son of God Loved Me And Gave Himself For Me

  • ❓ What do we think of when we think of love?
    • We think of someone who has love for someone else. It is not merely an intellectual thought. It is an affection for someone else.
    • Ephesians 5.2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

Christ's Love Moved Him To Give Himself For Us, In Our Place

  • Christ's love is not merely that He loved me and pitied me but couldn't do anything. No, Christ gave Himself up for us.
    • The Greek preposition for here does not just mean in place of. It means as a substitute for.

Christ is both the offering and the sacrifice

  • the offering and the sacrifice is not the same thing
  • But Christ Himself is both the sacrifice and the offering
    • Christ is the sacrificial lamb and Christ is the high priest.
    • They nailed Christ's hands and feet, but they only did that because Christ gave his hands and feet.
    • Christ was the morning and evening sacrifice. He was risen on the cross at 9am, and at 3am Christ gave up his spirit.

The Lord's Supper is His Pledge That He Has Given Himself

  • The eternal Son of God gave Himself for us! That is what the Lord Jesus Christ gives us at the communion table today.
    • There you taste His sacrifice and His forgiveness.

The Son of God Gave Himself For Me

  • Second for whom did Christ give Himself?
    • Paul tried to persecute Christ and His followers, and yet Christ loved Paul and gave Himself for Paul.
    • But this is not just for Paul. Paul gave Himself for more people!
      • Galatians 1.4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father--

He Gave Himself For Sinners Because He Loved Me

  • Don't forget that like the Galatians we all were sinners before. You are no exception. And yet Christ gave Himself for us foul sinners!
    • Ephesians 2.3 We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
      • Galatians 3.10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who doesn't continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them."

The Lord's Supper is the Sign And Seal of His Great Love For Sinners

  • Ephesians 2:4-7 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved-- and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;

The Son of God Gave Himself For Me An Offering And Sacrifice to God

God Requires Your Death and My Death

  • Some people think that there was no need for Christ to die on the cross. He could have simply forgiven sinners. This is not so.
  • Actually God requires death for you and I because of our sin.
  • The miracle of salvation is that Christ paid the penalty of sin and death in our place.
    • Christ atoned for our sin and guilt
    • Christ washed us and made us pure.

Christ Atoned For My Guilt and Invites Me To His Table

  • This truth is not only proclaimed to us from the sermon pulpit.
  • Christ also says to us at the communion table "come to me". Here we can see that He says "drink from my cup and you will see who I did this for"
  • Communion is not for the self-righteous. No it is for those who abhor themselves. Those who see that they have no righteousness outside of Jesus Christ.
    • The Christian does not think themself worthy to sit at the table of Jesus Christ.
    • the miracle of the love of Jesus Christ is that at His table He says eat my bread, and drink my cup, and as long as you do this in memory of me you will receive the blessings of my covenant

Application

When You Have This View of Christ You Will Not Want To Sin

  • After we have received so great of a gift of salvation why would we want to continue in sin.
  • Do we still struggle with sin? Certainly. Daily we must put to death our sin, beat our chest and repent to Him.
    • But the difference is that in Christ no sin will cause us to truly walk away from God, nor will any sin undo His work of salvation.
  • Remember these things. Love so amazing, so divine, demands that we think of it every day!
    • Isaiah 53.10 Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days and Yahweh's pleasure will prosper in his hand.
      • Wow, it pleased the Lord to bruise His Son, and yet I deserved that punishment. This is the same Son to whom He said "This is my Son, with whom I am well pleased".
  • ❓: Does that break your heart? Does it mean something to you? Does it make you say to yourself Now, I never want to sin again. Those who are God's children, that is what it means to them.
  • ⭐: Think about these things every day continually.
    • Do not say "I do not remember what the minister taught this week."
    • Meditate on it, dwell on it, remember it, ponder it, and let it cause you to worship God and obey Him.
  • Then you will be able to say (Galatians 2.20) "I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me."
  • We often think of communion on Earth here in our church. But there is also a table with the Lord in Heaven, with His church in glory.
    • We will have communion with Moses, Paul, and all the saints, including your loved ones who are in Christ.
