📖Bible Passage

Psalm 104:25-26

There is the sea, great and wide, in which are innumerable living things, both small and large animals.
There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.

Points

  • The sea and ocean shows God's incredible power and majesty.
  • leviathan, is a creature in the sea:
    • It is great, and terrifying, beyond our power
    • Yet it is a "play thing" for God.
    • God has designed some things, like leviathan, to teach us to fear Him
      • If we fear the creature, how much more should we fear the Creator of that creature.
    • See notable occurrences of leviathan
  • What does we learn from Job 41?
    • it has these enormous limbs, and great strength.
    • Yet it has graceful proportions
    • it is impregnable, invincible.
      • covered in strong scales: v15
      • the scales are tightly sealed together
    • No creature is equal to leviathan
    • it breathed out fire Job 41: 19
  • What is your relationship to leviathan?
    • Could you possibly conquer him?
    • Could you domesticate him?
    • Could you play with him like with a bird?

Lessons That God Teaches Us Through The Leviathan

It Takes an Incomparable Creator to Create an Incomparable Creature

  • Psalm 135:5-6 : God is in a class of His own. Nothing can compare to Him.
  • We try to "put God in a box" to understand Him, but no box can possibly contain Him.

God Is Awe Inspiring

  • Job 41:8-10 : If no one is able to stand against leviathan, then who is able to stand against God?
    • The answer is no one.
    • Hebrews 10:31 : It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God
    • How much more grateful then should we be knowing that Christ has quelled[1] that anger of God against us.
      • Nothing could tame that anger save for God Himself.

God Is Indebted To No One

  • Just as we could not put leviathan in our debt, we couldn't possibly put God in our debt
  • Romans 11:33 references Job 41
  • The leviathan is a great evidence against evangelical Arminianism.
    • You did not put God in your debt.
    • You did not do something for which God owes you anything.
    • God is so far above you that it is unimaginable.
    • When God stooped to save you, it was all His grace.
    • He does not need you, or me or any of us.
    • He simply saved you because He loves you.

God is Unconquerable

  • Men would not dare to stand against leviathan,
  • so why do we all rebel against God?
    • We say "I will not follow You, praise You"
    • Don't we realize our folly?
  • If God is unconquerable, then that also means that God conquers all.
  • God conquers death and injustice.
    • Paul: Romans 8:38-39 Nothing can separate you from the love of God.
    • In all your trials and sufferings, you may not know why but you know who will and has saved you.
    • Spurgeon: You do not defend a lion. You let him out of his cage.
      • God does not need us to protect Him. He conquers all.
