📖Bible Passage

how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation--which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard,

Points

  • This is a very great, important and short text.
    • ❓: When is the last time you have considered your sins?
    • This text is about a very important sin: neglecting your salvation.
      • The sin of neglect is a very big sin, because salvation is such a big gift.
  • 3 perspectives on the sin of neglecting salvation
    1. Of all God's works nothing compares to the greatness of our Savior's salvation
    2. Salvation is the intimate work of the triune God in sinners
    3. the Greatness of the Father's work to prepare for His Son to come into the world.

The greatness of God's Salvation

Nothing compares to God's Salvation

  • God's many great works:
    • God's first great work is creation.
      • How long did it take? God created everything in just six days.
    • God's second great work is providence.
      • God is guiding history day by day by all that happens and by all that does not happen.
    • God's greates work is His salvation of sinners.
      • ❓: The greatness of God's salvation should force us to ask ourselves "*If God's salvation is so great then how do we think we can be safe if we neglect so great a salvation?"

Salvation is the intimate work of God in sinners.

The Father's work to prepare for His Son to come into the world.

The neglect of God's great salvation

4 Groups who are not guilty of neglecting the salvation

  1. the unfallen angels.
    • they have never sinned.
    • true believers are not guilty of neglecting the salvation
      • that is, at least not in the truest sense of the word. We may not love the Gospel as much as we ought. But true believers fundamentally love the Gospel and live by these things, however imperfectly.
        • I hope you are like that.
    • devils (fallen angels) are not guilty of this sin, that is because Christ did not save the devils.
      • there is no salvation for the devils.
      • God could have done the same for us.
      • Jude 1.6 Angels who didn't keep their first domain, but deserted their own dwelling place, he has kept in everlasting bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.
    • The millions of human beings who have never neglected the Gospel because they have never heard it.
      • They are guilty of many sins but not this sin.

Who is guilty of this terrible sin?

  • All those who hear or have heard the Gospel and do not surrender to its authority
  • Those, like Pilate, who have heard the truth and acknowledge it and yet wash their hands of it.
    • Pilate tried to escape Jesus, but that is impossible.
  • How do we neglect the Gospel? We neglect the Gospel when we cooperate with Satan.
  • 8 ways we can neglect the Gospel
    1. by ignorance of our sins
    2. by presumption of our righteousness or salvation
    3. by our unbelief
    4. by discouragement.
      1. It is such a great salvation and I'm such a great sinner. How can it be for me?
    5. Unwillingness.
    6. worldly mindedness
      • We are attracted to this shallow world
    7. hard heartedness
    8. laziness, sloth.

Application

  1. This text reminds us that salvation is not automatic:
    • Children who are baptized are brought up in an atmosphere of promise and yet they too can be brought up taught in the truth and yet never taking it to heart.
    • The sacrament of baptism is not a guarantee of our children's
  2. This text impresses upon parents the importance of teaching our children how important and weighty the Gospel is.
    • Your children and those around you need to see you modeling godly living.
  3. This text underscores the importance of teaching our children how dangerous and large our sin is
  4. Press upon children the importance of not becoming spiritually lazy
  5. This text reminds us that no one escapes by his effort, or his heritage or his knowledge.
    • ⭐ Our weakness does not weaken our parental authority. On the contrary it shows our children that we need Jesus just as much as they do.
  6. Fill your parenting with Gospel hope. Plead with the promises of the Bible.
    • Teach your children How shall you escape if you neglect so great a salvation?
      • Korra, Dathan and Abiram saw the salvation and yet neglected it and were destroyed.
      • Every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty (Hebrews 2.2). You and I will not escape judgment for our transgressions and disobedience. We need the Gospel. Turn while it is still the great day of grace!
