📖Bible Passage

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

Points

  • Who is Jesus Christ? Do you know Him?
    • Where you spend your eternity depends on those two questions. You cannot be wrong about those questions and be right with God.
    • We learn from scripture that God and only God can save us.
      • Thou must save and thou alone.
      • Jesus Christ is our complete and entire righteousness.
        • Romans 5.1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
  • When God gives us grace and peace, He is giving us Himself.
    • Jesus the Man
    • Jesus the Lord, our King
    • Jesus the Christ

Jesus the Man

  • Jesus is the name God gave when He was born and became flesh
    • Luke 1:31-33 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him 'Jesus.' He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom."
    • Matthew 1:20-23 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins." Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel," which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
  • The name Jesus means Yahweh saves.
  • As a human Jesus understands our needs in two ways:
      1. He understands our need through His personal experience
      • He does not understand our need for grace and salvation in the same sense that we do. (He, Himself is not a sinner.) But He understands because He Himself bore our sins and their punishment.
      • But unlike us, He had the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, because He was in perfect right relationship with God.
      1. He understands our need through close observation
      • He saw the foul, wretched nature of humanity's sinfulness.
        • And this observation further made clear man's utter need for salvation.
        • Allison: If you are in Christ, this morning, then you understand, at least in a measure, your need for Him.

Jesus our King, our Lord

  • As a man, Jesus understands our need for grace and peace.
  • But man alone cannot give grace and peace. Man, alone lacks the authority and power to truly deliver grace and peace.
  • What does the title Lord imply?
    • Lord implies dignity.
      • In the Bible, dignity was given to someone who ought to have respect.
      • Lord was equivalent to sir and in many instances is translated as sir in English
        • John 4.11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?
    • Lord implies sovereignty.
      • This means that God has authority. One who rules over his subjects.
        • And Jesus is not just any Lord. He is the Lord almighty. The ruler over all things.
      • Jesus: "If I, your Lord and teacher, you also ought to wash one another's feet."
      • Revelation 19.16 He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."
      • Romans 14.9 For to this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
    • Lord means God Himself; Jesus, Himself is the fount (source) of these gifts (grace and peace)
      • Joel 2.32 It will happen that whoever will call on Yahweh's name shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.
      • Romans 10:10-13 For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. For, "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Jesus the Christ

  • "Christ" is not Jesus' last name or surname
  • the Christ means the Annointed One
    • Christ is Annointed One in Greek
    • Messiah is Annointed One in Hebrew
  • Matthew 16:15-17 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
  • Jesus is the promised and annointed Savior:
    • This teaches us that the gifts of grace and peace will be gladly and readily given to us because the source of these gifts is our loving Savior.
    • Imagine that you were wounded in battle, and a medic comes. They would gladly save you and wouldn't think to do other wise.
      • Likewise we are spiritually wounded and Jesus is our spiritual surgeon, ready and willing to save us.

Application

  • Jesus is the one most able to meet our need for salvation.
    • And He is the only one capable of meeting this need.
    • And our need for salvation is our greatest need.
      • We need peace with God.
      • And we need the peace of God which surpasses all understanding.
  • Look to the Lord Jesus Christ for grace and peace for yourself and for others.
    • He understands your need for His grace.
    • He is able to give you that grace and supply that need.
    • In fact, that is the very reason why He came into this world.
    • He is willing to save you:
      • You can come to Him confidently asking for salvation because you know that He delights to save His people.
  • Pray for those around you to receive grace and peace
    • Pray for nonbelievers
    • Pray for your fellow believers.
