📖Bible Passage

They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, Yahweh's saint.

Points

Several O

  • Moses, Aaron and Miriam
    • Exodus 6.20 Amram took Jochebed his father's sister to himself as wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses. The years of the life of Amram were one hundred thirty-seven years.
    • These siblings were:
      • Moses: Israel's representative to God,
      • Aaron: Israel's high priest
      • Miriam: israel's prophet
  • Christians are compared to Aaron. We are called to be royal priests for God. and we are called to be saints as Aaron is called a saint
    • This is surprising because humanly speaking Aaron was a great failure.

Aaron's great failures:

Aaron was not governed by God's Law

  • Aaron failed when the people demanded that he make a golden calf
  • Aaron was not governed by God's Law, though he should have been.
    • If we are not controlled by the Holy Scripture, then we will be open to the demands of the people around us. Oh how many people have gone wrong at that point.

Aaron was weak when he should have been strong.

  • Aaron should have stood his ground. He should have rejected the people's demands and told them to hold firm in faith to Yahweh.

Aaron tried to salvage things when he was in a bad situation

  • Exodus 32:4-5 He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molded calf. Then they said, "These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt." When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh."
  • when Aaron saw that the people had rebelled against God, Aaron tried in his own feeble way to honor Yahweh.
    • This pathetic attempt not only did not honor Yahweh, it actually was even more offensive.

Aaron Promoted False Worship

  • Today, our culture views worship as something that should be fun and pleasurable for us, rather than something that should bring honor and glory to God.
    • Aaron turned this worship into dancing and play.
      • Exodus 32.19 As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses' anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain.

Aaron was such a sad contrast with Moses

  • Moses came down the mountain with the two tablets of testimony.
    • Moses already knew what he would see because God had told him in advance. On the other hand Aaron had no idea the wrath that was in store for him.
    • There were multitudes worshipping the golden calf and only one Moses coming down. Who was there more of? Who was right in this?

What a pathetic plea, Aaron made

  • Exodus 32:22-24 Aaron said, "Don't let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. For they said to me, 'Make us gods, which shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him.' I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.' So they gave it to me; and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf1."
    • and out came this calf: Aaron deflects his guilt. He does not take accountability for his action but instead speaks in the passive voice. But he most certainly was responsible:
      • Exodus 32.35 Yahweh struck the people, because of what they did with the calf, which Aaron made.

Aaron was nearly put to death

  • Deuteronomy 9.20 Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

aaron was jealous of Moses

  • In Numbers 12 we have another occassion of Aaron's great failure.
    • Numbers 12:1-2 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman. They said, "Has Yahweh indeed spoken only with Moses? Hasn't he spoken also with us?" And Yahweh heard it.
    • Aaron used a false pretext. He was jealous against Moses and used another issue to hide his jealousy. This is gossip.
  • It is interesting that Psalm 106:16 says that they envied Aaron, Yahweh's saint.
    • This is referring to Dathan and Abiram's rebellion.
    • But Aaron himself was rebellious. What Aaron sewed, he reaped upon himself.
  • But look how Moses responded to the rebellion of Aaron and Miriam.
    • Numbers 12:3-4 Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all the men who were on the surface of the earth. Yahweh spoke suddenly to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam, "You three come out to the Tent of Meeting!" The three of them came out.
    • Moses did not respond with vindictiveness or pettiness.
  • And look how Aaron did eventually repent.
    • Numbers 12.11 Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord, please don't count this sin against us, in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have sinned.
    • Aaron confessed his sin and sought forgiveness.
  • Still Aaron should not have been in this situation in the first place.

Aaron had unrighteous anger

  • this is the third failure of Aaron in Numbers 20 .
    • the people were thirsty
    • Numbers 20:3-5 The people quarreled with Moses, and spoke, saying, "We wish that we had died when our brothers died before Yahweh! Why have you brought Yahweh's assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals? Why have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink."
    • when the people say they wish they had died, they are referring to when Dathan and Abiram rebelled against God and were swallowed up by the ground. Now they are so ungrateful that they wish they had the same judgment upon them.
    • Numbers 20:6-11 Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces. Yahweh's glory appeared to them. Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, "Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink." Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, as he commanded him. Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?" Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank.
      • Moses and Aaron disobeyed God.
    • Numbers 20.12 Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you didn't believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."
      • Moses and Aaron were punished for this.
    • Numbers 20.13 These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.
      • God was sanctified (hallowed) among them.
        • Even in our disobedience we bring glory to God. God will always be sanctified, whether we are willing or unwilling.

Aaron Was Still A Saint Of The Lord

  • Despite every failure of Aaron, he was still a saint of the Lord.
    • he was still set apart for the Lord.
  • We often get hung up by our failures and sins. We think how can I possibly be a Christian? But God by His grace, views us as a whole and takes the overall view of the great work He is doing in our lives and we must do the same.
    • this is why Hebrews 11 lists all the positives of the saints and doesn't mention any of their sins.
    • We are moving from grace to grace. His Holy Spirit is making us more and more holy.
    • It is God's view that counts every time. Not ours.
      • Whatever we say about ourselves God says the opposite.
        • If we think the world of ourselves, then we shall be humbled by God.
        • If we are humble than God will exalt us.

Application

  • Psalm 116.15 Precious in Yahweh's sight is the death of his saints.
  • You need Jesus.
    • Rest, trust and believe in Him and you too will be a saint, a holy one of God.
