📖Bible Passage

They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of the sky.

Points

  • Today we consider two miraculous events:
    • God fed the people with quails
    • God fed the people with manna bread from Heaven.
  • God took care of His people in the wilderness.
    • He not only fed them and supplied them. He also taught them through provision.

What did God teach His people by his gift of quail and manna?

  • He wanted them to know Him.
    • If they knew God, then they would know everything else.
    • When man knows his God, he knows himself.
      • If man thinks he knows himself, and yet doesn't know his God, then man is sorely mistaken.
  • They learned how much God cares for them:
    • Exodus 16.18 When they measured it with an omer, he who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack. They each gathered according to his eating.
    • He provided them exactly what they needed.
    • God not only provided for all the Israelites, He also provided uniquely for each individual Israelite.
    • Here they were freed from the burden of knowing where their food would come from. Every morning their food was precisely where they needed it, when they needed it. They never had famine.
    • Here we learn that God is always thoughtful.
      • Thoughtful of all the people. Thoughtful of each person.
  • They learned of God's greatness.
    • What an incredible feat that God can feed over a million people in the wilderness for 40 whole years! And He never ran out of food to provide them.
    • There was a constant supply of plenty from God.
  • They learned of God's liberality and generosity.
    • The poor and rich were both well-fed and yet paid nothing to feed themselves.
    • James 1.5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
  • They learned of God's immutability
    • God not only fed them once or twice. He fed them continually and consistently for 40 years.
      • Exodus 16.35 The children of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate the manna until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.
    • God never fails you. He never stops providing.
      • His eye is not dim, His ear is not heavy and His arm is not short.
      • Therefore trust in Him to provide for you.
  • They learned of God's wisdom.
    • God gave them precisely what they needed. They were not malnourished. They were not lacking in nutrients.
    • God gave them precisely how much they needed.
    • God never errs. He never makes mistakes. He always does precisely what they needed.
    • God did not give them spare scraps, or detestable bland food. No what he gave them was delicious.
      • Exodus 16.31 The house of Israel called its name "Manna", and it was like coriander seed, white; and its taste was like wafers with honey.

God taught his people by making the manna a test for them

  • The people were provided for every day, but only for that day. There was nothing left over for the next day. Each day they had to trust that God would provide again the next day.
    • If you tried to gather extra so that you'd have more for tomorrow, it would spoil and stink, and thus it would also become evidence of your lack of faith.
    • Exodus 16.20 Notwithstanding they didn't listen to Moses, but some of them left of it until the morning, so it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them.
    • Likewise, remember that God has just enough grace for you as you need.
      • You have just as much grace from Him as you need today.
      • But you cannot store extra grace from today for tomorrow. Trust in Him to provide grace for you tomorrow, as He already has today and so many days in the past.
      • Eat your own manna. Eat it. Do not store it up. It is meant to be eaten, not stored.
  • Furthermore, God tested them with The Sabbath Day.
    • On the 7th day of the week, no manna appeared. And on the 6th day, God provided twice as much manna so that they could gather extra to sustain them during the sabbath.
    • Exodus 16:23-27 He said to them, "This is that which Yahweh has spoken, 'Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to Yahweh. Bake that which you want to bake, and boil that which you want to boil; and all that remains over lay up for yourselves to be kept until the morning.'" They laid it up until the morning, as Moses ordered, and it didn't become foul, and there were no worms in it. Moses said, "Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to Yahweh. Today you shall not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath. In it there shall be none." On the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather, and they found none.
  • The Lord teaches us about temporal things
    • God teaches us that all of our supplies come from God. Every single thing that we have, comes from God.
  • The Lord teaches us that the supply of God is sure to all who believes in Him.
    • Matthew 6.33 But seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
    • Psalm 37:23-26 A man's steps are established by Yahweh. He delights in his way. Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for Yahweh holds him up with his hand. I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread. All day long he deals graciously, and lends. His offspring is blessed.
    • Philippians 4.19 My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
  • But the Lord also teaches us that we will have to gather our supplies:
    • God is not the patron of idleness.
    • If any man shall not work, he shall not eat.
    • Thank God for opportunities of diligence.
    • Work is a blessing.
    • We should be content with what God supplies for us.
    • True, they did not have any luxuries in the wilderness, but if they were wise they would see that His provision for them was a tremendous luxury.
  • Likewise God provides for us spiritual food:
    • If you have spiritual life then of course you must feed your spirit.
      • What must we eat? What is food for our soul?
        • God Himself. Christ.
        • John 6:32-35 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn't Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." They said therefore to him, "Lord, always give us this bread." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
    • You and I need daily spiritual food.
      • Feed on the Lord Jesus Christ every day.
      • Do not rely on last year's manna. It is stale. You need fresh sustenance from Him.
      • Don't just gather God's word. Eat it, consume it. That means to live it, practice it. Live out your practice for Him.
    • Sometimes God will supply you doubly:
      • He often supplies us twofold on Sabbaths.
      • John 6:47-58 Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don't have life in yourselves. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he who feeds on me, he will also live because of me. This is the bread which came down out of heaven--not as our fathers ate the manna, and died. He who eats this bread will live forever."
