Luke 5:33-39

They said to him, "Why do John's disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?" He said to them, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days." He also told a parable to them. "No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old. No one puts new wine into old wine skins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved. No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, 'The old is better.'"

Points

In relationships there is a right time for advice and there is a right time for sympathy, simply showing up and listening.
In our passage, they are calling Jesus to fast, but Jesus responds that this is not the time for mourning.
When you trust in Jesus
- He breaks your old mold
- He provides you a new mold

Jesus breaks your old mold

Context:
- Jesus’ disciples had just finished partying with the tax collectors.
- But John’s disciples were fasting in mourning for Israel’s occupation by the Roman’s.
  - They ask Jesus why his disciples were not fasting. It’s like asking, Don’t you even care that our nation is being oppressed
  - Jesus’ response is that it would be inappropriate to mourn during a wedding. One should not mourn during a time of celebration.
  - Jesus is showing them that they are in a different reality than they thought they were. He broke their mold. They didn’t realize He was the King bringing His Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
What molds do we have that ought to be broken?
- The nice Jesus mold: Jesus would never say anything mean
  - Actually, Jesus is King and righteous judge and He will not let sin go unpunished
- The therapist Jesus mold: the idea that Jesus is only there to make me feel better and would never make me feel uncomfortable
  - Actually, Jesus went way out of His comfort zone and called His disciples to do the same
- The political mascot Jesus: Jesus just happens to hold all the same political opinions as I have and I use him to justify my beliefs
  - Actually, if Jesus affirms all your political views then that’s probably not the Jesus of the Bible
  - The problem: The moment your political movement fails, then you will think that Jesus failed you.

Jesus Provides a New Mold

Parable of the Shirts

No one would tear a new shirt to patch an old shirt, then you would have two ruined shirts

Parable of the Wineskins

No one would pour new wine into old Wineskins
- When the wine ferments it builds gases and pressure and pop the old Wineskins
The point: If you try to fit Jesus into your old categories and understanding then it simply will not fit.
- Jesus is showing us an entirely new teaching and reality.
- If we try to fit him into our old way of thinking then it will come to ruin
- ⭐️ Instead of conforming Jesus to our ideas we need to conform ourselves to Him.
  - More and more we need to ask ourselves “What does Jesus want me to do here?”

Jesus Brings You New Joy

Real, true, durable joy is found in submitting to Jesus.
- Naturally we do not like to submit to Jesus. We don’t like to admit that we are wrong and that we need Him.
Luke 5.35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days."
- Jesus pointed forward to the day when He would die.

Application

Takeaway: You can find joy in Him, even when it is costly, because He paid the ultimate price for you.
