📖Bible Passage

He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.

Points

  • Pharaoh struck God's firstborn, the people of Israel, and therefore, God struck Egypt's firstborn.
  • People often scoff at God and say Why doesn't God do something about the wicked in this world?
    • But where would you like God to begin? With you and I? With our sin?
  • In the tenth plague we see:
    • the fearful justice of God: as God brings judgment upon Egypt and kills each of their first borns
    • the mercy and grace of God: for God spared Israel, that is He spared every family who obediently observed the Passover on that night.
      • Yes even the Egyptians would be spared if they only obeyed.
      • Likewise, all who will be in Heaven are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, that is Christ.
  • In Exodus 11, Moses announced this plague to Pharaoh.
    • Notice this time, there is no condition. God simply promises this plague will happen no matter what.
      • This is because by this time Pharaoh's heart was woefully stubborn and hardened.
      • God also predicts and dictates precisely what Pharaoh and the Egyptians will do.
        • Exodus 11.8 All these servants of yours will come down to me, and bow down themselves to me, saying, "Get out, with all the people who follow you;" and after that I will go out.'" He went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.
        • And God fulfills this prediction here.
          • Exodus 12:31-32 He called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel; and go, serve Yahweh, as you have said! Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also!"
            • What audacity we see in Pharaoh! How dare he tell Moses to bless him also. After all his rebellion and his continued rebellion even at this moment!
            • But Pharaoh would not be blessed. He would be swallowed up in the sea as judgment for his unbelief.
          • Even non-Jews, Gentiles, left Egypt and joined them in the exodus.
            • Exodus 12.38 A mixed multitude went up also with them, with flocks, herds, and even very much livestock.
  • God establishes the Jewish calendar and the Passover festival
    • Exodus 12.2 "This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you.
    • Exodus 12.3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth day of this month, they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household;
    • The lamb is killed: Exodus 12.6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month; and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at evening.
    • the blood of the lamb marks their house: Exodus 12.7 They shall take some of the blood, and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel, on the houses in which they shall eat it.
    • ALL of the lamb must be roasted and eaten.: Exodus 12:9-10 Don't eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire; with its head, its legs and its inner parts. You shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; but that which remains of it until the morning you shall burn with fire.
    • Seven days they shall eat unleavened bread: Exodus 12.15 "'Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
    • In Exodus 12:1-20, God tells Moses what to tell the people. And in Exodus 12:21-40 Moses repeats the same thing to the people.
      • This tells us how important it is to God that we follow His Word precisely as He instructs it to us.
      • Yet ever since the destruction of the temple in AD 70, the Jewish people do not keep the Passover in this way.
      • The Armenian Christians still keep this Passover in this way.
        • This is pointless because they fail to recognize that Christ is the Passover lamb today.
  • ⭐ Christ truly is the Passover lamb.
    • 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. Therefore let's keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
    • Matthew 26.28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.
    • 1 Peter 1:18-21 knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ, who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake, who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
    • The Passover lamb is spotless and without blemish or imperfection. Christ is without sin or fault of any kind.
      • Luke 23.4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no basis for a charge against this man [Jesus]."
      • Luke 23.14 and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that perverts the people, and behold, having examined him before you, I found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.
      • John 19.6 When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him."
  • Those who are obedient to the Passover are saved. God passes over judgement upon them. Those who sacrifice the lamb and eat it completely, leaving nothing remaining.
    • But those who do not partake of the Passover lamb receive judgment and death.
    • Christ, the Passover Lamb, came to take away our sins and now we are clothed in His righteousness.
      • there was no blood on the doorposts of the Egyptians. To them, the unbelieving, it was laughable. Why would you paint the blood on the door? How silly. But there were not laughing the next day. For death came.
        • Exodus 12:29-30 At midnight, Yahweh struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock. Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
        • Let us not think the Israelites to be any better than the Egyptians. For many of them remained unbelieving. They too rebelled against God and died before ever entering the promised land.
          • Hebrews 4:1-2 Let's fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, even as they also did, but the word they heard didn't profit them, because it wasn't mixed with faith by those who heard.
          • You can grow up in a Christian home, but being in a Christian home will not save you.

Application

  • Here is the lesson: You will not enter Heaven, if you do not personally have the blood of Christ written on your house.
    • Look also at Rahab in Jericho. All the people of Jericho were defeated by God. But Rahab was spared. Why? Because her faith caused her to tie that scarlet cord outside her house.
  • Do not delay to trust in Him. For the day of judgment cannot be predicted and it will come to you like a thief in the night.
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:2-10 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape. But you, brothers, aren't in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. You are all children of light and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness, so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night. But since we belong to the day, let's be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
    • Revelation 1.18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.
      • Jesus has the keys of death. You do not know when you will die.
        • Do you know where you are going when you die?
    • Matthew 10.28 Don't be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
    • Remember that God can give, and God can take away.
    • Be holy as our Father is holy.
  • the mixed multitude followed the Lord.
    • Exodus 12:38
    • Zechariah 8.23 Yahweh of Armies says: "In those days, ten men will take hold, out of all the languages of the nations, they will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, 'We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'"
    • Trust in Him and join that multitude. Follow the Lamb of God.
