📖Bible Passage

For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Greek. For in it is revealed God's righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, "But the righteous shall live by faith."

Points

  • If you were to share the Gospel, where would you start?
    • In 1968, astronauts orbited the moon for the first time. When asked to speak on live television before the country and the world, what did they way? In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. They read the first 10 verses of Genesis 1.
  • When we share the Gospel, we ought to start with God
    • We teach that God is creator
      • Colossians 1.16 For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him.
    • We teach that God is just and righteous and that man is guilty and sinful
      • Isaiah 6.3 One called to another, and said, "Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh Sabaoth! The whole earth is full of his glory!"
      • Deuteronomy 32.4 The Rock: his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he.
    • We teach that God will judge the world.
  • Do not start the Gospel from the point of view of man.
    • many of us like to start with man. We start with saying that man is so great, good and beautiful. But this is not so.
      • Romans 3.23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;
      • Isaiah 53.6 All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
      • do you want to see how deeply God cares about righteousness? Don't look to ourselves. Look to God's work on the cross. Look at His punishment upon Jesus.
    • When we sin, we are not just sinning against each other, we are sinning against God. We are violating God's law.
      • Who is the enemy of the sinner? Satan? No that is a small enemy. God is your enemy. You broke His law and He is your judge. But your enemy is also your savior! God wants to save you from Him.
      • Hosea 6.7 But they [God's people], like Adam, have broken the covenant. They were unfaithful to me, there.
      • Don't ignore or smooth over the consequences of sin.
      • Ephesians 2:1-3 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience. We also all once lived among them in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
  • We teach the consequences of sin.
  • We teach that without Jesus we are lost.
  • Then present Jesus to them.
    • Just a reminder:
      • the Gospel is not Jesus and
      • the Gospel is not God's Kingdom
        • the Gospel is the way we enter God's Kingdom.
    • Don't go straight to Jesus' death. Preach about Jesus' life. Show that Jesus perfectly obeyed and fulfilled the law. This is why we can rely on Him to be our mediator
      • Romans 5.19 For as through the one man's disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.
      • Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children.
      • Hebrews 4.15 For we don't have a high priest who can't be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
      • 1 Peter 2:22-24 who didn't sin, "neither was deceit found in his mouth." When he was cursed, he didn't curse back. When he suffered, he didn't threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.
    • It is not only about getting out of hell. It's about living out the Gospel in righteousness.
  • The Gospel calls us to repentance.
    • We are not talking about an altar call. We're talking about real repentance. Turning away from your sins.
      • Mark 1.15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and God's Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News."
      • Acts 2.38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of The Holy Spirit.
  • The astronauts were bold enough to present God as the Creator. But we don't just need a Creator, we need a redeemer.
    • Let's be faithful with the Gospel. Let's not minimize it, not compromise it.
