📖Bible Passage

1 Timothy 1:15-17

The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
v16
However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.
v17
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Points

  • The word Gospel is used about 450 times in the NT
  • What is the Gospel?
    • Greek: evangelion
      • ev: Good
      • angelion: message
    • The Gospel is a good message or good news
    • This word was used in ancient times for all kinds of things.
    • After Jesus, the Christian church used the word exclusively for the Good News of Jesus Christ.
      • The Good News is that Jesus saves us and that you do not have to save yourself
        • It is not something that we have to do. Jesus already did it.
        • He came not
          • to just give us good advice.
            • like the stoics teach
          • to tell us there is salvation if you can find it
            • like Buddha teaches.
        • He came to provide salvation Himself.
          • This is not a salvation for you to accomplish. It is not hypothetical.
        • Arminians teach that you need to believe as a condition to your salvation.
          • The Reformed tradition teaches that you do not need to do anything to receive salvation. It was already done for you.
  • What did Jesus have to do that we cannot do? (This is the Gospel.)
      1. Someone who was sinless had to pay for all our sins?
      • We cannot pay for our sins because we are finite and our sins are infinitely offensive to a holy infinite God.
      • Jesus was born of a virgin so that He did not have any sinful human nature.
      • Jesus led a perfect, sinless, holy life.
      • We call this Jesus' passive obedience.
      1. Someone had to obey the law perfectly.
      • Jesus not only paid our debt.
      • Jesus also is the sole source of our righteousness.
        • Jesus credited (or imputed) His righteousness toward us.
        • We are not merely sinners washed clean, brought to net zero. No we are made righteous because of Him, brought to net positive, pleasing to God.
      • In Jesus, God is satisfied, because Jesus perfectly obeyed the law.
      • We call this Jesus' active obedience.
  • There was a terrible price that Jesus had to pay in order to do this work.
    • Jesus had to suffer more than any human being will ever have to pay in this life.
  • Why is sin so bad?
    • Sin means I am a failure.
    • Sin means I am a rebel against God.
  • Sin is deeply ingrained in us and we cannot stop sinning
    • This is because of Total Depravity.
    • We are depraved because the roots of sin are within us.
      • We are not sinful because the world outside has corrupted us.
      • We are sinful because we are sinful within us.
      • Luther: Sin is like a beard. You can shave a beard, but the beard will just grow out again.
    • Every part of us, every faculty of our being is stained by our sin.
      • Our affections, mind, will, hopes etc. are all depraved, alienated, estranged, offensive to God.
      • Every part of us needs to be saved.
    • Our depravity lords itself over our lives.
      • Every one of us is a sinaholic, addicted to sin.
      • Paul does not say "I was a chief sinner". He says "I am a chief sinner". 1 Timothy 1:15
    • The wages of sin is death:
      • Hell is the place for sinners.
      • But the Good News is that you do not have to go to Hell because Jesus Christ came to save sinners.

1 Timothy 1:15-17

  • 1 Timothy 1:15: Paul says this is a faithful saying. That Greek phrase means that this statement is always true. It is never not true. Christ Jesus came to save sinners.
    • Why does Paul stress this point so strongly?
      • Paul wants to reassure you. No matter how bad your record of sin is, Christ Jesus really came to save exactly the kind of person that you are.
        • This is a faithful statement. It is always true.
        • This is the only way to be saved.
      • Paul wants to give relief to those who are groaning over sin.
      • The Gospel is wonderfully reliable. We can trust in it.
        • 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9: those who reject the Gospel will be punished.
          • when you reject the Gospel, you reject Jesus and the loving gift He gave you.
    • This does not mean that when you receive the Gospel, you will have no more problems.
      • Paul says I am chief sinner
        • How could this be? Paul, I thought you were saved.
        • As God's people are saved, the Holy Spirit allows us to have wisdom and we see even more clearly how sinful we are inside. We become all the more convicted not less.
  • In verse 16 we see the pattern (example) of the Gospel demonstrated in Paul.
    • Paul: However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.
    • We need to realize if wretched Paul can be saved then surely I can be saved as well.
    • The Gospel has a pattern. And the pattern is the lives of believers. There is a long history of sinners throughout history, who were wretched and undeserving and yet saved, not of themselves, but because of the grace and mercy of Christ.
  • In verse 17 Paul is so grateful for this Gospel that he bursts into praise of God (doxology).
    • Jesus is King eternal, immortal and invisible
      • eternal, immortal: He will always be King. He will never break His promise or lose His power.

Application

  • Aren't you ever sick of sin? Don't you wish you could be rid of it. This is all possible for you.
    • The prodigal son was rebellious and wasted away his father's wealth. He came back to his father in disgrace, and humility. And his father took him back with open arms and love.
    • Fall down at the feet of Jesus. Repent of your sin. Surrender to Him and you will find joy, peace and hope.
