📖Bible Passage

I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom: preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and teaching. For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts, and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables.

Points

  • We have the phrase, The church must be Reformed and always reforming.
    • The Reformation was truly a preaching movement. It spread through preaching.
    • At the time of The Reformation, few preachers even know how to preach correctly. Many so-called preachers didn't even know the ten commandments.
  • Here in our text Paul commands his protege Timothy to preach the word.
  • This Greek word preach comes from to herald the Word. A herald spreads a message from a king to a people. They are an official messenger.
  • Preach with authority because this is the Word of God.
    • John 14.10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
    • In the same way preachers today speak not their own words but God's words. They speak with the authority of God's words.
  • Paul tells Timothy to be faithful in 4 ways:
      1. in season and out of season
      • preach even when you do not feel like it. Preach in times of despair, in times of disunity, little growth, discouragement, apathy, ignorance, when people despise and blaspheme God. At all times, press on and continually faithfully preach.
      • Rev. John Barich was constantly preaching the Word of God even when it was against the Law. The Judge told him you have preached in all kinds of seasons. John said Judge I have only preached in two seasons, in season and out of season.
      1. rebuke and exhort others.
      • rebuke: Correct them when they are wrong. Even when and though it will seem to be harsh.
      • exhort: speak with comforting and encouragement.
      1. With patience:
      • Remember how longsuffering God has been with you. Call sinners to God earnestly and urgently but be patient with them.
      • Remember that if it were not for God's grace, you never would have received it either.
      1. with sound doctrine
      • with true teaching.
      • We live in a day and age that despises truth. We don't want to be corrected. Instead we just want to hear stories and ideas.
      • Doctrine is good and glorious and food for the soul.
        • Don't forget how glorious and magnanimous God's word is.
  • The reformed catechisms speaking on preaching.

Application

  • Here are ways we should reform in our hearts and lives:
    • Experiential preaching
      • preach how things ought to go (romans 8) how things do go (Romans 7) and where we are going.
      • The preacher should teach application.
      • It is discriminatory. It separates the precious from the vile. It opens the kingdom to believers yet shuts the kingdom to unbelievers.
      • ❓: How is preaching transforming you now? How has it transformed you in the last month, last year?
    • Preach our utter need for God
    • Preach our utter gratitude for God
