📖Bible Passage

Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.

Points

  • Pharaoh is a man of a hardened heart.
    • Pharaoh's word seems to mean very little. Multiple times he promised to let God's people go, but multiple times Pharaoh broke his promise.
  • Yet God overcame Pharaoh's stubbornness, and the might of Egypt. God forced Egypt to submit and let God's people go.
    • In fact, Egypt not only let God's people depart, but they were glad to let them depart, for they had great fear.
      • Exodus 12.33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, "We are all dead men."
      • The Egyptians had experienced the terrifying power of God's power.
      • Sinners do not want to be in the presence of God and His people. They cannot take the presence of God because God is holy and they are unholy, just and they are unjust, pure and they are impure.
        • Isaiah 6.5 Then I said, "Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!"
        • Just as Isaiah was filled with dread because he was a sinner in the presence of the Holy God, so too the Egyptians dreaded to be in the presence of God and His people.

The marks of sinners who are lost and spiritually dead

  • There are men, women and children around us who are dead in their sins.
  • There are marks of these spiritually dead sinners:

A. They disrespect the true and living God

  • Look at how Pharaoh not only disobeys God, but mocks and disrespects Him.
    • Exodus 5.2 Pharaoh said, "Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don't know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go."
    • The Egyptians believed that their rulers were not only powerful. They believed that they were in fact gods.
  • Perhaps you are hearing this message and asking yourself Who is he to tell me what to do?
    • You ask this question because you do not understand who is bringing the message. It is not me who brings this message. It is the LORD.
    • The question that you are really asking is "Who is the LORD to tell me what to do?"
      • He is your righteous Judge.
      • Are you like the barley that will be kept or the chaff that will be discarded and burned? Matthew 3.12
      • Are you like the sheep or the goats?

B. They reject all God's many warnings

  • The LORD the Egyptians over and over again.
    • It is not that the Egyptians did not know that God was going to strike them with plagues. He warned them repeatedly.
    • Yet even when God warned Pharaoh, Pharaoh even banished Moses from his presence. He was effectively saying Stop warning me. I do not want you to warn me anymore.
    • There are many sinners who respond to the Gospel by saying Go Away! I do not want to hear you anymore. What a foolish thing to say! What they are really saying is I do not want to hear any more about how I am perishing. I do not want you to show me why and how I must be saved.
  • Today, you are warned by God. He tells you of your sinfulness and your need to be made right with God.
    • Do not be like Pharoah. Do not reject God's warning.

C. They neglect to have the blood of the Lamb applied to their soul

  • Don't you see Christ in the tenth plague?
    • A spotless lamb is slain and it's blood is applied to the doorpost of the house. The house where the blood is applied, the first born son is spared, but the house without the blood, the son's life is forfeit.
    • In the same way Jesus Christ, the spotless lamb shed His own blood and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53.5
    • we are washed and made clean by His blood.
      • Revelation 1.5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us, and washed us from our sins by his blood--
      • ❓: Are you washed clean in the blood of Christ?
      • ⭐: You can be washed clean of all of your sins. But you must accept His gift of grace in faith.
        • Do not reject the warnings of Christ.
        • He will not cast you out. He will not mock you. He will save you and give you wonderful peace forever.
