📖Bible Passage

He spoke, and the locusts came with the grasshoppers, without number, ate up every plant in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.

Points

  • God brought judgment upon the Egyptians for their worship of other false gods, and they would not allow Godʻs people to worship Him.
    • Numbers 33.4 while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom Yahweh had struck among them. Yahweh also executed judgments on their gods.
  • Another effect of the plagues is that God was glorified.
  • The LORD reveals His mercy to the people of Israel. He showed his mercy and kindness to His people even though they are undeserving.
    • God spared them of these plagues.
  • The plague of hail and fire:
    • Those who feared the Lord stayed inside and therefore were spared from this plague.
  • Some people fear the Lord and yet do not change their ways. Clearly this is not the same kind of fear.
    • It is a sense of fear but it is a filial fear. It has no faith or conviction of sins. It did not produce repentance in them.
      • Even Pharaoh feared God, but it was not a filial fear. He was only afraid of God's power and judgment. But he still defiantly returned to his false gods.
      • To be a Christian is to be a new creation. To turn from your former evil ways because He is worthy to be praised.
      • Pharaoh was headstrong. Are you headstrong like him?
      • ⭐ It is not enough to merely know that you are a sinner.
      • Proverbs 22.4 The result of humility and the fear of Yahweh is wealth, honor, and life.
  • These plagues should have caused the Egyptians from their false gods.
    • What can these gods do? Nothing.
      • Likewise, what can your things do for you. When you die, your health, wealth, strength and riches will be gone. You will be bankrupt before the Lord.
        • The wicked men will put their trust in strength or riches. How foolish. These things will all fail them.
  • Pharaohs repentance was false, and therefore God hardened his heart again.
    • Be careful when you hear the word of God. Be careful when you pray. Lest God harden your heart.
    • Exodus 10:1-2 Yahweh said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these my signs among them; and that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your son's son, what things I have done to Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that you may know that I am Yahweh."
      • Notice that God not only hardened Pharaoh's heart. He also hardened the heart of his servants.
  • Parents must teach their children the ways of God in the home.
    • Psalm 78:1-8 Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old, Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done. For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children, that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God's deeds, but keep his commandments, and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn't make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
    • Deuteronomy 6.7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
  • God has commanded us to instruct our children day by day about God, Heaven and spiritual matters.
    • This is what we vow to do at baptism.
    • Parents have you done this last week? Or did you have the television on rather than read the word of God.
    • Do not allow your children to watch and read and do things without Godly supervision.
    • But you say I am too busy. No you can't afford not to do this.
    • Read the word of God with your family and pray.
    • How many parents are guilty of neglecting this commandment of God?
    • We have so much more to tell our children about to day. We can tell them about their Savior and the wonderful works of God.
      • Proverbs 22.6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
  • So then Moses came to Pharaoh in Exodus 10.3.
    • Exodus 10.3 Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.
    • Then God threatens to bring the plague of the locusts.
    • God spoke and brought the locusts. Psalm 105.34
    • The locusts were dreaded in the east. The Egyptians foolishly made petition to their locust god senahem. But it was for naught. Yahweh is in control of all things.
    • In Exodus 10:6, Moses does not wait for a response from Pharaoh. He just leaves. Pharaoh asks Moses to come back. He claims that he will submit to God's demands and yet he asks Go, serve Yahweh your God; but who are those who will go? Exodus 10.8 Pharaoh is trying to slyly turn the terms of the deal. In v10, he changes is so that only the men may go.
      • Here we see that Pharaoh had a false repentance.
      • In many ways Pharaoh epitomizes Satan. One of the things that Satan does not like is when young people worship God with their parents.
        • I challenge you to find anywhere in scripture where the children are separated from the people when we worship God.
          • If you cannot teach your children to sit still at dinner, then how will they ever learn the reverence for God necessary to sit still for God at worship.
        • Not only are the young people the target of Satan, but also the old people.
          • Many old people retire and begin to lag and lose zeal for the Lord.
        • How important it is for us that we know and understand Satan and the ways he schemes against us.
          • 2 Corinthians 2.11 that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
  • Then Moses bought out the plague in Exodus 10.13. The Lord sent locusts to cover Egypt.
    • Exodus 10.13 Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and Yahweh brought an east wind on the land all that day, and all night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
  • Finally we see that Pharaoh again has false repentance.
    • Exodus 10:16-17 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste, and he said, "I have sinned against Yahweh your God, and against you. Now therefore please forgive my sin again, and pray to Yahweh your God, that he may also take away from me this death."
    • This time is indeed different. This time Pharaoh asks for God to forgive his sin.
      • And yet Pharaoh is not acknowledging his past sins. He is only acknowledging his sin in this moment.
      • so he asks Moses to pray for him and Moses does.
        • Moses prayed for his enemy. Exodus 10.18 Moses went out from Pharaoh, and prayed to Yahweh.
        • How did God answer this prayer? He hardened Pharaoh's heart. Exodus 10.20 Why did he harden Pharaoh's heart, because his repentance was a false repentance.
          • Beware of false repentance. In others and in yourself.
            • Others can pretend to repent just to seek favor.
            • But we can even deceive ourselves into thinking that we have repented when really we have not.

Application

  • How is your family worship and family prayer?
    • How wicked we are if we know the truth and yet have not transmitted it to our children. We are not better than Pharaoh.
    • These same plagues were warned to us in the book of Revelation.
      • Revelation 16.21 Great hailstones, about the weight of a talent, came down out of the sky on people. People blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for this plague is exceedingly severe.
      • Revelation 9.3 Then out of the smoke came locusts on the earth, and power was given to them, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
    • But there is hope for those who repent
      • Joel 2:25-27 I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you. You will have plenty to eat, and be satisfied, and will praise the name of Yahweh, your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and my people will never again be disappointed. You will know that I am among Israel, and that I am Yahweh, your God, and there is no one else; and my people will never again be disappointed.
      • The Lord is gracious to those who truly repent. And it is the only way to be restored to God. When God saves He blesses.
