📖Bible Passage

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, God's love, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Points

  • Today we consider our response to the love of God
  • God calls us to cultivate genuine gratitude for the love that God shows to us.
  • How should we respond in appreciation?
    • How we respond to someone's love really does matter. Unrequited love is painful and causes loneliness.
  • God shows his love in selfless sacrifice, compassionate generosity, undeserved mercy and grace.
  • If you are a child of God, then the God of Heaven loves you.
  • Many people misuse the doctrine of God's love and abuse His love.
    • They say things like since God is love that means He will love me no matter what.
      • It is true that God is good to all beings.
        • The fact that God does not immediately strike us dead for our sins shows God's incredible patience and kindness towards all.
    • Many people fail to see the entirety of what is taught in John 3.16.
      • For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

          1. God loved the world
          1. He gave His son
          1. Whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.
      • Many people only look at and focus on the first part, that God loves us, but neglect the next two parts.
    • ⭐ When you reject the Gospel you are rejecting the love of God.
    • ⭐ When you reject the love of God, you are rejecting the very best love that has or ever will be.
      • It is when trouble comes that we see whether love is truly genuine.
        • It takes great faith to love someone even in bad times. It takes great faith to love God even when affliction strikes us.
        • When we are troubled we feel compelled to ask Does God still love me?
          • This is the wrong question. We should ask What is God teaching me through this trouble?
          • Hebrews 12.11 All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
  • Case Study: John Wesley was impressed by the Moravians when they lived out joy and gladness, despite being tossed by a terrifying storm. How? It was because they were sure of God's love.

Application

  • How else should we respond to God's love? Be assured of God's love toward you.
    • When we are distraught, we need encouragement and comfort. We need to be reminded of the truth of God's love toward us.
    • Luke 11.13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give The Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
      • Remember that God, your Father loves you! Cling to this and do not forget it. This truth will sustain you through great troubles.
    • The enemy tries to deceive us into believing that God does not love us.
      • This is what the serpent did to Eve. He caused Eve to question God's love toward her. He implied that God was trying to withhold love from her.
  • You must care about the souls of other people. You must communicate to your neighbors, the love that God has toward them, and their desperate need for it.
    • Show them your need for it. How God loved you even when you did not deserve it. And implore them If God can love a wretched sinner like me, then surely He loves you.
    • No man can convert a sinner. The Holy Spirit must work in their heart. But what does the Holy Spirit use to convert sinners? Faithful Christians.
      • You can and must tell others of the love of Christ.
  • Finally, we show appreciation for God's love by showing love toward each other. Christians should love each other.
    • 1 John 4.11 Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.
    • 1 John 3.16 By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
    • By ought, The Holy Spirit means this is your debt. We owe a response to God's love.
      • We owe our entire lives to God. We owe our salvation to God. We owe everything to God.
    • What if it is difficult to love another.
        1. Get your facts straight. When you do not love another believer it is usually because of some misunderstanding.
        1. Get to know each other.
        • Malachi 3.16 Then those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another; and Yahweh listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared Yahweh, and who honored his name.
        1. Forgive your brother or sister. How can you not forgive your brother, when they haven't hurt you nearly as much as you hurt Christ, who forgave you
        1. Pray for one another.
        1. Mortify those things that inhibit love.
        • 1 Peter 2.1 Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
        1. Drink deeply of the love of God and Christ.
        • This is the best cure for not loving?
        • When is the last time that you took a fresh sip of the love of God?
          • When did you last pause and consider the sheer magnificence of the love of God.
          • Consider the costliness and intensity of God's love for you.
          • Pray that God will transcribe some of His love toward you, so that you might love those around you.
