Psalm 104:27-28

These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season.

v28
You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good.

Points

  • God abundantly gives food to all the diverse creatures across creation.
    • The earth is fruitful.
    • Though there are times of less and lack, winter and famine, these times
      • bring us hope for a future season of abundance
      • teach us to cling to God in faith and trust in Him
  • ⭐: We only need to gather for it is God who provides.
    • The Israelites did not have to make bread for God provided the manna, and all they had to do was gather what God gave.
    • it is true that we must labor hard by the sweat of our brow in order to gather, but this is not because God is lacking, it is because we are fallen and sinful.
    • Be content with what God gives. Receive with gratitude.
    • We do not need to earn what God gives us.
      • God's mercy, grace and salvation are a gift.
        • James 1:17 every good and perfect gift comes from God.
          • It is a gift. You do not earn a gift, only to receive. A gift is freely given.
          • God delights to give. He does not take pleasure in you being destitute and poor.
  • Look at the birds. They are not anxious about what they will eat. For their father provides for them.
    • Luther: "Mortal, cease from care and sorrow. God provides for the morrow."
  • Psalm 127:2 It is vain to rise up early and stay up late in toil, for God gives sleep to His loved ones.
    • This verse stands against workaholism.
    • Remember that we can gather no more than that which God gives.
  • We must gather what God gives or else we will not receive from Him.
    • The fish must learn to catch the fly. The lions must hunt their prey.
    • In no society does the sluggard succeed.
    • This is also true in business.
      • The book of Proverbs regularly preaches against the sin of idleness.
      • John 5:17 Jesus: "My father is working and so am I."
      • 2 Thessalonians 3:10: "If a man does not work then he should not eat"
    • This is also true for providing for our souls.
      • We need God to provide nourishment for our souls.
        • He does this through providing His Word in the Bible.
        • He does this through ministering to us by the Holy Spirit.
        • He does this through sermons preached by His faithful ministers.
      • John 6:27: "labor for the food that leads to everlasting life"
      • Luke 13:24: "Strive to enter through the narrow gate"
        • the life of a Christian requires active labor and endeavor.
        • God gives you faith but you must believe
          • The Holy spirit does not believe for us. Neither does He repent for us.
  • We may freely gather what the LORD gives.
    • ⭐: we have divine permission to gather from the LORD.
    • When the LORD provided manna for the people of Israel, there was no guard. There were no tests. No qualifications. All were permitted to gather. Man and woman. Any age.
      • John 6:37: the one who comes to me I will by no means cast out
      • You do not need to say "I do not know if I am elect". None of us know. Only God knows.
        • Are you a sinner? Do you need salvation? Good. He freely offers it to all that come to Him.
      • If you are willing to gather, God will always give.
