📖Bible Passage

Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me. I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.

Points

Paul went up to Jerusalem 14 years after his conversion

  • Paul went up by revelation to Jerusalem.
    • by direct revelation from God
    • This alone should have been proof enough that Paul preached the true Gospel and that the message of the Judaisers was a counterfeit gospel.
    • Paul presented his Gospel message to the Apostles in Jerusalem and they affirmed his message as true and good and right.
      • The agreement of all orthodox teachers is a powerful confirmation of the message of Christ.

The Gospel which Paul preached was being challenged to take away our liberty in Christ

  • what part of Paul's message was being challenged
    • Galatians 2.4 This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage,
  • What is the epistle to the Galatians all about?
    • It is the liberty which Christians have in Christ.
    • This is what the false brothers were attempting to challenge.
    • ❓ : Do you know what it means to have freedom in Christ?
      • If you do not understand freedom in Christ then this letter to the Galatians will make little sense to you.
      • John 8.36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
  • What are we free from? We are free from sin and the curse.

Christ Frees Us From The Curse of Sin

  • when mankind sinned, sin entered the world.
    • Now there are weeds in the garden. Storms.
    • There was no disorder or disjunction until the introduction of sin.
    • the curse on unbelievers is that everything that happens in this world, even successes, will eventually turn out for their ruin.
  • Christ frees us from the burden of sin.
    • If the Son makes you free, you will be free from the curse.

Christ Frees Us From The Pleasure of Sin

  • ❓: Why do we sin? Do you get up in the morning hoping to sin? No you do not, and yet we still sin.
    • ⭐: We sin, because sin promises us pleasure. But this is a false and hopeless promise.
  • ⭐: But Jesus Christ frees us, not only from the curse of sin, but even from the pleasure of sin.

Christ Frees Us From The Power of Sin

  • Christ saves us from the power of addiction to sin.

Christ Frees Us From To Enjoy Worshipping God

  • We are not only freed from sin, we are even freed to God.
  • We will enjoy worshipping God.

We can only receive this liberty by faith alone because faith unifies us to Christ

  • The very moment that we turn to faith in Christ we receive this freedom instantly.
    • There is no price, no cost, no qualifications, no exam to pass, no trial period, no strings attached.
    • It is for anyone. You do not have to be special.
      • It is for the Gentile as well as the Jew.
        • Even the Judaisers believed that the Gentiles could received the Gospel. However, they taught that Gentiles must first be circumcised.
  • The Gospel is truly through faith alone.
    • Not faith plus you views on baptism, or plus your eschatology, or faith plus following the pope.
    • It is faith in Christ and no one else.
  • We are united to Christ:
    • We are regenerated because Christ is resurrected.
    • We are sinless because Christ is sinless.
    • We are holy because Christ is holy.
  • The moment you do not have Christ, is the moment that you do not have any of these things.
  • ❓: Are you at one with Christ? Are you united to Him?
    • Galatians 2.16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
      • Justified just means being declared right with God.
        • Only Christ justifies us. Not man.
          • Galatians 2.6 But from those who were reputed to be important--whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn't show partiality to man--they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,
          • Paul did not need the approval of the Apostles. He already had the approval and commissioning of Christ. But Paul went to the Apostles because he wanted to be in agreement and unity with them.

Application

The truth of the Gospel is lost by adding anything to faith.

  • If we add a single thing to the Gospel, then it is a false, incomplete Gospel.
  • The Gospel is the only thing that you lose something by adding to it. If you add to the Gospel, then you have taken away from it, you have destroyed it.
  • You might think surely there must be something else. No there is no other condition for salvation. Only faith in Christ.

The simplicity of the Gospel disappears if you look to anyone but Christ and Him crucified.

  • the Gospel is truly simply. It is in Christ alone.
  • Go to Him, to Christ and depend on Him.

The freedom of the Gospel can not be separated from a relationship with Jesus.

  • You want this freedom? You need a relationship with Jesus.
    • It is all to do with being united to Him in faith.
    • Christ must be everything. All of our desires, all of our trust.
    • Christianity is not the acceptance of a certain code of practice. It is a relationship with Jesus Christ.
      • ❓: How is your relationship with Jesus Christ today?
        • He is very difficult to have a falling out with. He is for sinners. He cares for sinners.
    • Jesus is the only one who can save you from your sin.
