📖Bible Passage

But when it was the good pleasure of God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me through his grace to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn't immediately confer with flesh and blood,

Points

  • Jesus Christ is The Gospel, the eternal Son of God. The only begotten Son.
    • God reveals Himself in the Person and work of Christ.
  • There is also a mystery in Jesus' incarnation
    • Galatians 4.4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,
    • Genesis 3.15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel."
      • Jesus fulfills this prophecy
    • We cannot begin to understand these truths. They must be shown to us by God.
      • God revealed these things to Paul on the road to Damascus.
      • If we know anything of the grace of God, it is according to God's good pleasure.
      • God reveals Himself to us through the Spirit
        • 1 Corinthians 2.10 But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
        • John 16.7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don't go away, the Counselor [The Holy Spirit] won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
        • John 15.26 "When the Counselor [The Holy Spirit] has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.
  • God reveals Himself to us in many ways
    • He reveals Himself in creation
    • He reveals Himself in His mighty works
    • He reveals Himself in His Word, the Scriptures
    • He reveals Himself, in Jesus Christ, the Son of God
      • Hebrews 1:1-2 God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.
      • John 1.1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
      • God's revelation of Himself in Scripture ultimately brings us to Jesus Christ
  • When God reveals Himself, there is call that comes to the soul of the sinner.
    • This is not merely external preaching. It comes in power from the Holy Spirt.
      • This calling from God is inward, it is efficacious.
      • 1 Thessalonians 1.5 and that our Good News came to you not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and with much assurance. You know what kind of men we showed ourselves to be among you for your sake.
      • 1 Thessalonians 2.13 For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
    • We need God's word to come in power because we are so utterly broken in sin.
      • Genesis 6:5-6 Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of man's heart was continually only evil. Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.
      • Jesus Himself teaches us that sin comes out of the hearts of men.
        • Matthew 15:17-20 Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly and then out of the body? But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn't defile the man."
  • There are at least 4 aspects to the way that The Holy Spirit reveals Himself to us.
    • heart persuasion: He must persuade us of the truth
      • 1 John 5.10 He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who doesn't believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.
    • heart approbation (approval, praise)
      • We are persuaded of the truth but even this is not enough
        • 1 Timothy 1.15 The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
    • heart satisfaction: we must be satisfied in Him
      • Psalm 34.8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
    • heart purification: God purifies the heart of the sinner.
      • Ezekiel 36.26 I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
  • The revelation of Chris is also personal:
    • Yes there is a corporate aspect to faith. We are not saved in isolation. We are saved into a people, into a church, into a community of believers.
      • When Paul writes his letters, sometimes they are personal, addressed to a specific person, but more often than not it is addressed to the churches.
    • But ultimately the revelation of Christ is personal in our soul.
      • Matthew 16.17 Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you [singular], Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
      • Jesus revealed his wounds personally to Thomas. How does Thomas react? He says My Lord and My God. Can you truly say that Jesus is your Lord and your God?
      • here we see Paul revealing his personal relationship with God.
        • Paul reveals further:
          • Galatians 2.20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
          • Is this your life? Has God revealed Himself to you in this way?

Application
