📖Bible Passage

Blessed are those who keep justice. Blessed is one who does what is right at all times.

Points

  • Matthew 5.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
  • We change but God does not.
    • He is always all that He is.
      • Psalm 106 starts with a declaration of who He is.

There are only two paths in life

The path of disobedience and darkness

  • Sadly this is the path that God's people take over and over again in this Psalm
  • It is a path that we need to repent of. We need to turn out of that path
    • we need to stop disobeying God
    • we need to stop rejecting His word.
    • We need to recognize who He is and praise Him.

The path of obedience and life

  • The other path is described in verse 3.
  • It is the path of obedience and light eventually leading to Heaven.

Know God and live in the light of who God is

  • the man described in this Psalm is a man who knows the God of whom he speaks.
    • God is not abstract to Him.
    • He has known God's goodness and mercy personally and he meditates on it
    • To know God in this way means to delight in Him.
    • he wants to do what pleases the Lord.
  • Where is the best place to see God's goodness, mercy, power and salvation? Only in Jesus Christ

Know God's goodness, mercy, power, and salvation through Jesus Christ

  • If you want to see God's goodness then you must look at the salvation that is accomplished only in the work of Jesus Christ.
    • If you know this God then you will delight in righteousness.

Keep justice

  • The godly are those who keep justice.
    • They deliberately and conscientiously bring themselves in obedience under God
    • Jesus is the perfect example of this. :
      • Psalm 40:6-10 Sacrifice and offering you didn't desire. You have opened my ears. You have not required burnt offering and sin offering. Then I said, "Behold, I have come. It is written about me in the book in the scroll. I delight to do your will, my God. Yes, your law is within my heart." I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know. I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.
      • See Psalm 1

Do righteousness in all circumstances

  • God has not changed even if our circumstances have.
    • God is still good and merciful and kind.
  • No matter what circumstance you find yourself in, do not cease to do justice.
  • Sometimes it is relatively easy to act as righteous people when others see us. We like to be seen as good people, and to preserve our reputation.
    • sometimes it is harder to keep up the facade at home.
    • But if we are Christians, we should be working not because our boss's eye is on us, but because our Lord's eye is on us.
      • Ephesians 5:15-16 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
      • Ephesians 6.7 with good will doing service as to the Lord, and not to men,
    • We ought to do righteousness in private as well as in company.
    • ❓: What are you in private? Are you the same as you are in public?
    • We need to do righteousness in sickness as well as in health
      • Perhaps you are less patient and gracious when you are tired.
      • It is not the strength of our body that governs if we are right before God.
      • Chronic disease can restrict us from doing what we want to do, but it can also provide us great opportunities to glorify God.
    • We need to do righteousness in wealth as well as poverty.
      • Jeremiah Burroughs reached the conclusion that it is actually harder to do righteousness in times of wealth and prosperity.
      • Proverbs 30:7-9 "Two things I have asked of you. Don't deny me before I die. Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is Yahweh?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
    • We need to do righteousness in old age as well as in youth
      • A lot of youth live as if they are immortal.
        • The young can be arrogant or pushy
      • Old age can be a time of greater weariness and weakness. Our bodies and minds slow down.
        • The old can be bitter
      • Whatever the challenges, those who know their God continue to keep justice.
    • We need to do righteousness whether provoked or not
      • These kinds of confrontations can stir up in us anger.
    • We need to do righteousness in times of fear as well as confidence.
      • Fear has a way of shaking and unnerving us. It can lead us to foolish decisions.
      • We act without prayer and consultation.
      • We respond in an unhelpful way.
      • It is well known that in times of crisis, we panic, and we simply respond without thinking. Some simply freeze and some become frantic.
      • The situation that you face may be uncertain.

Application

How to sustain knowing God and living in light of who He is

  • What do we do when we feel our weakness.
    • Is that when we suspend our righteousness and put it aside? No even then, we must continue in justice.
  • True righteousness is not occasional. It is sustaining and continuous over weeks, months, years and throughout a Christian's life.
    • No matter what happens we must remember that God is God. Though the world shifts and changes, He does not.
    • This is why it is so important that we fix our eyes on God.

Fix your eyes on God as He is revealed in Jesus Christ

  • Why should we focus on Him? Because He is good!
    • this is our act of thanksgiving to Him, our act of praise, when we keep God in view and focus on Him, following Him even in the shifting sands of our fallen world.
  • We know God in and through the glory of Jesus Christ. Where is the knowledge of God shown most clearly? In Jesus.

Do not cut yourself off from the fellowship of the saints.

  • Do not absent yourself from fellowship of God's people.
    • Minister to one another. Encourage. Edify. Console. Comfort, and bless each other.
    • We need to be much in prayer
    • We need to dwell on His truth.
    • Read from the works of the mighty men and women who followed and trusted in Him.

Choose the right path.

  • Then the path of obedience will be more sweet and delightful to you.
  • ❓: So which path are you on? Obedience? Or disobedience?
  • If you know that you are in the path of obedience then you need to know the God who is good! Whose mercy is forever. Whose saving work is the only path to life.
