You hide your face; they are troubled. You take away their breath; they die and return to the dust.
You send out your Spirit and they are created. You renew the face of the ground.

Points

  • Why we need to study the person and work of the Holy Spirit
      1. Because of our need for salvation
      1. We need to have balanced preaching.
      1. There is so much unscriptural teaching on the person and work of the Holy Spirit
      1. Because the church of God, the people of God, is the temple of the Holy Spirit, so we ought to know Him who dwells in us.
  • The Holy Spirit is God:
    • We see him in Genesis 1:2
  • Psalm 104 is one of the most beautiful and detailed descriptions in the Old Testament of the Holy Spirit's creation of the earth.
    • The Hebrew word spirit is ruakh. The same word is used for breath and life.
    • Takeaway: The Spirit of God created all things and continually renews all things on an ongoing basis.
      • Psalm 33:6: By Yahweh's word, the heavens were made: all their army by the breath of his mouth.
      • Job 26:13: By his Spirit the heavens are garnished. His hand has pierced the swift serpent.
    • The bible also teaches that the eternal Son of God made all things.
      • John 1:3: All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made.
      • This shows us that the Son and the Spirit are one in perfect tri-unity.
  • The bible teaches that the Spirit is the breath of God.
    • But God Himself is spirit. What does it mean for the Holy Spirit to be His breath? How can breath have breath?
      • Think about your mouth. Breath comes out of your mouth. And when you speak you must use your breath. Breath is not only your life, but it also is your means of communication to others.
  • ❓: What would this world be without the Spirit?
    • There would be no life. There would be no breath.
    • We should adore the Holy Spirit as the giver of all life.
  • It is the Holy Spirit who is the source of all life. And when the Holy Spirit returns then life is taken away
  • The Spirit revealed truth to us through Scripture.
    • Isaiah 64:4 , 1 Corinthians 2:10 : In the time of Isaiah, the Gospel was a mystery unrevealed. But in the time of Paul, the Holy Spirit revealed this mystery to us.
      • It is a duty, not a privilege to come to God and worship Him.
  • The Spirit gives life and if it withdraws, then we, creation die.
  • The Spirit of God breathed into the life of the first created man and he lived
    • Genesis 2:7: God breathed life into humanity and caused it to live. God has done this to no other being or kind in all of creation.[1]
    • This is the reason why abortion is so clearly wrong.
      • they are not only made in the image of God. They also have God's spirit (life, breath) in them.
    • Ezekiel 37:5-10: God showed Ezekiel the dry bones and then said.
      • The Lord Yahweh says to these bones: "Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you will live. I will lay sinews on you, and will bring up flesh on you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you will live. Then you will know that I am Yahweh."'"
      • God finds us utterly dead in our sins and He gives us life. This is what it means to be born of the Spirit. John 3:5-6.
        • We need the Holy Spirit not only to be physically born, but to be spiritually reborn. Converted.
          • Part of what it means to be spiritually reborn is that the Holy Spirit has given us a new heart which desires to do good and to be a part of God's good new coming Kingdom.
      • We need the Holy Spirit not only at conversion but throughout the walk of the Christian.
        • 1 Corinthians 1:21-24
        • 2 Corinthians 1:21-22: The Holy Spirit has sealed us and has given us the Spirit as a down payment for our hearts.
        • ⭐: The Holy Spirit is our assurance of salvation.
          • Not our works. Not our speaking in tongues or other actions. But the Holy Spirt Himself is our assurance.
  • The Holy Spirit and the Son give us new life and life to the fullest.
    • Revelation 22:17: The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" He who hears, let him say, "Come!" He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely.
    • John 20:31: but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
  • Therefore, trust in the LORD and He will direct your paths.
