📖Bible Passage

But I make known to you, brothers, concerning the Good News which was preached by me, that it is not according to man. For I didn't receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me through revelation of Jesus Christ.

Also read: 2 Corinthians 4

Points

Paul Did Not Receive the Gospel From Man

  • Not one person has received the Gospel by birthright
    • No one is born with a righteous or holy nature.
      • It does not take long for any parent to realize that their child is born with sinfulness.
  • We do not receive the Gospel because of the teaching of any man
    • Men may bring the Gospel to our ear, but it is the LORD who brings it to our hearts.
      • We did not receive the Gospel from our earthly parents.
      • We did not receive the Gospel from John Calvin, or Martin Luther or any teacher.
    • We receive the truth because the Holy Spirit Himself has written it upon our hearts.
      • Yes many people labored earnestly to share the message of the Gospel, to preach it to unbelievers, but it was the Lord who spoke it in us.
      • In all that process, our real progress in spiritual growth and learning was from the Lord.
        • Our tutor is the Holy Spirit.
      • In the Holy Spirit we learn in many ways:
        • Patient meditation on the Word
        • Learning in the midst of and through tribulation which tests our faith and requires us to place our trust in Him.
        • Persistent prayer and pleading for the promises of God.
    • If you do not believe that it is necessary for the Holy Spirit to reveal the Gospel then you do not truly understand your depravity.
    • Theologians may teach us what is holiness but it is God who makes us holy.
  • We have received the truth personally by the revelation of it to our own souls by the Spirit of the Lord.

The truth of the Gospel is not according to man

  • The Gospel is not one of many religions
    • If anyone thinks that the Gospel is simply one of many then let him compare the Gospel to the other religions.
      • No other religion matches the glory God's divinely breathed out words.
    • Other religions lead you into dead ends but do not give you the same assurance that the Gospel gives us.
      • No other religion truly pacifies the guilt and fears of the sinner, while affirming the glory and justice of God.
  • The Gospel is beyond human thought
    • Human thought glorifies man, but the Gospel humbles man and glorifies God.
      • Man never could and never would devise a message which would always glorify God while continually humbling man.
    • And yet unlike every human system, only the Gospel truly brings hope to man, to every sinner.
    • The Gospel is opposed to human pride
  • The Gospel is immutable (unchangeable)
    • Modern thought is no less unsatisfactory than other religions.
    • Modern divinity bows its knee in honor of so-called science.
      • The thoughts and teachings of man in science and academia are ever-changing. They are shifting with the winds.
    • On the contrary, the Gospel abides forever because the Lord made it.
  • The Gospel does not tolerate sin
    • The Gospel teaches us to despise our own sin and to turn away from it.
  • The Gospel is so suitable for the poor and illiterate
    • Only the Gospel cares for the poor and oppressed. The weak and the forgotten.
  • People do not take to the Gospel
    • The Gospel is distasteful to mankind. We reject it and despise it because it tells us the truth. It condemns us for our sin. We hate it because we know that it is true.
    • This is why we desperately need the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Gospel to us.
      • If you take Christ out of Christianity then Christianity is dead.

Application

  • faith is the "great gate" by which we may receive the Gospel.
    • We are not to be judges to decide what truth ought to be.
    • We ought to accept the truth for what it is.
  • The Gospel provides us the one thing that we truly need, Himself.
  • If you do not accept the truth of the Gospel through the Spirit of God, then you cannot expect others to do so also.
    • Faith in the heart of the believer is the work of God.
    • Nothing can take away the faith that God has given you.
  • The heart of the Gospel, and the truth in it come from God.
