📖Bible Passage

Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power known.

Points

  • In Psalm 106.7 Our fathers didn't understand your wonders in Egypt. They didn't remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.
    • ❓: What do God's wonders mean?
    • Further more the people rebelled against God because of their lack of understanding of Him.
  • Psalm 106.8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power known.
    • But despite the people's sin and rebellion God saved them. Why? Because they deserved it? Certainly not. It was for His name's sake and so that He might make His power known.
  • Charles Finney and others in his time thought that we could guarantee revival in our time if we would do certain actions. He believed that we should always be in a state of revival.
    • This is not the case. No one can order God around. Only God can bring about revival.
    • Revival is the mighty work of God.
  • The mighty work of God is awe inspiring, powerful and beyond our understanding. It is rare and causes mankind to realize God's might.
    • When God makes His mighty power known, men bow there knees before Him and declare, The Lord, He is God!.
      • Exodus 9.27 Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "I have sinned this time. Yahweh is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.
  • God's mighty power is gentle.
    • Isaiah 40.1 "Comfort, comfort my people," says your God.
  • God's mighty power is protective
    • Psalm 121.3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.
    • One of the most common accusations that the enemy brings against God is that God has forgotten you. What is the answer? Why do believers face awful circumstances? Is it because there is a flaw in the care of the Lord for me? Or is it because the Lord is graciously bringing me before Him to humble myself and seek His face.
  • God's mighty power is successful:
    • God's aims are completely accomplished.
      • How many of God's people were delivered from Egypt? All of them. None were left behind.
      • When Christ paid for our sins on the cross, how many sins were paid for? The answer is all for whom Jesus died. None were missed.
  • God's mighty works bring us to worship Him.
    • Psalm 106.12 Then they believed his words. They sang his praise.
    • Exodus 15:1-2 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, and said, "I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and his rider into the sea. Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; my father's God, and I will exalt him.
    • God is the subject and the glory.
    • When a so-called revival causes us to dwell on the spectacle and yet not dwell on the might of God, this is not a true revival.
  • God's Word is exalted.
    • Psalm 138.2 I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth; for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.
      • Not only God's name is exalted, but also God's Word is exalted.
    • Romans 11.27 This is my covenant with them, when I will take away their sins."
      • This is the covenant of redemption.
    • Deuteronomy 7.9 Know therefore that Yahweh your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments,
      • the Lord has given His Word to Jesus Christ and to those who follow Jesus Christ. And if the Lord has said, it then He will do it. It shall be fulfilled.

Application

  • We need to see the mighty power of God.
    • It must be true and not counterfeit.
    • Christ-centered.
    • God exalting and not man exalting or Earth exalting.
  • We must wait upon the Lord in faith.
    • Psalm 62.5 My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him.
      • My soul waits only for God. Wait upon the Lord.
    • How do we wait? What does it mean to wait upon the Lord.
      • It means to do what God has commanded us to do?
        • Matthew 24.46 Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes.
      • What has he commanded us to do?
        • Pray
        • Seek the Lord.
